NFL Lines: Who Will Sign Plaxico Burress

Posted by Ashley Carmichael on 7/19/2011 9:41:54 AM

The last time Plaxico Burress played football was in 2008; nearly three years later Burress is making an attempt to get back in to NFL Lines.

In 2008, Burress was sentenced to two years in prison for possession of an unlicensed gun.  Now, 33 years old, Burress’ marketability is tarnished.

After sitting out two full years how can Plaxico Burress make an impact in NFL Lines?

He is 33 years old and likely lost most of his luster.  His last stint in New York lasted four seasons, where he was very productive.

In those four years, Burress accumulated 33 touchdowns with 244 receptions.  Furthermore in 2008, Burress caught the Super Bowl winning touchdown to put his team over the heavily favored New England Patriots.

Despite his career triumphs and accolades Burress will not be an impact player in NFL Lines again.  People often compare this situation to Michael Vick’s.

However it is very different.  Vick was able to come back because he was such a freak athlete and had aspects to his game that other quarterbacks do not, whereas, Plaxico Burress is like a slower, less-productive Randy Moss.

Furthermore, Michael Vick was only 30 years old when he was released from prison; Plaxico is about to turn 34.

Burress was never the fastest player in the league and was never a pro bowler.

Ater two years of imprisonment, Burress is very likely out of shape and not as motivated.

Also Plaxico knows he was a number one option in New York, and it will be difficult for him to switch roles.

It is a very big risk signing a deal with this guy.  Burress claims to have a few teams marketing for him, however he will not be signing a log term deal anytime soon.
