The New Orleans Saints released Shockey last week after keeping the injury-prone tight end on their roster for three years, where he was part of the 2009 Super Bowl-winning squad.

Shockey received offers from multiple teams around the league, with the Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers expressing the most interest.

The 30-year-old Shockey agreed to a deal that will turn him into a Panther for the upcoming 2011-12 NFL lines season.

Carolina’s head coach Ron Rivera – who was hired this January to replace John Fox – stated that the Panthers are “very pleased to add Jeremy to our football team. He is a highly competitive player with a good skill set and a wealth of experience. He should make a solid contribution to our offense.”

Rivera put an emphasis on acquiring a pass-catching tight end immediately after he was hired.

Shockey provides the best resume of any tight end on the free agent market. The 10-year veteran has been selected to four pro bowls, is a two-time Super Bowl champion, and has was selected as an All-Pro in 2002.

With an injury-riddled 2010-11 NFL lines season, he finished with 41 receptions for 408 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Shockey is a big improvement at tight end for the Panthers, who would have been stuck with Jeff King and Dante Rosari. The 251 pound, 6’5” Shockey will provide Carolina with a pass-catching tight end and a huge safety valve for rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen.
