NFL Lines – Patriots Get Deep Threat

The New England Patriots have recently signed free agent wide receiver Brandon Lloyd to a 3-year, $12 million NFL lines deal.

Last year, Lloyd was traded from the Denver Broncos to the St. Louis Rams. In 11 NFL lines games with the Rams, Lloyd recorded 51 receptions for 683 yards and five touchdowns. In 2010, his best season statistically, the 6’0’’, 200-lbs wide receiver led the league with 1,448 receiving yards, 77 receptions, and 11 touchdowns. In his nine years in the NFL since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2003 draft, Lloyd has played with five different teams. Most recently, Lloyd was the second receiver signed by the Patriots this week after the recent addition of Anthony Gonzalez.

A Key Addition
Lloyd should be able to make quite an impact in New England. Alongside Tom Brady, the 30-year old Lloyd will be playing with the best quarterback in his career thus far, after stints with the Broncos, Redskins, 49ers, Bears, and Rams. Lloyd will add an extra dimension to this Patriots offense that reached the Super Bowl last year. He should be able to create some more space for Wes Welker, and provide for an extra factor for opposing defenses to worry about next NFL lines season.

Throughout his journeyman career, Lloyd has remained relatively anonymous while playing for bottom-table teams. He is nowhere near the Patriots’ household names of Wes Welker an Randy Moss. However, Lloyd has posted solid numbers throughout his career. Between 2003- 2009, Lloyd recorded 164 receptions for 2, 370 yards and 15 touchdowns. In 2010-2012, he recorded 147 catches in 31 games for 2, 414 yards and 16 touchdowns.

There is no doubt that with the addition of Lloyd, the Patriots are only improving an already elite offense. Lloyd should be able to post big numbers with Brady, as well as presenting the Patriots’ offense with another alternative to Wes Welker, which should only cause more headaches for opposing defenses. With a young defensive corps that should improve with experience come next year, the Patriots can be looked to again as favourites to make a deep run into the NFL lines post-season.
