Posted by Marcello Messina on 8/8/2011 10:37:23 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed linebacker LaMarr Woodley to a 6-year massive contract worth $61.5 million.

2010-2011 NFL Season
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. NFL: 12-4
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. AFC North: 5-1

NorthBet Numbers: The Pittsburgh Steelers were 10-6 ATS this season

LaMarr Woodley’s solid defensive performance last NFL lines season earned him a new 6-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, worth a mammoth $ 61.5 million

Woodley will be re-joining a Steelers defense that was one of the best last season, leading the NFL in rush defense (allowing 62.8 ground yards per game) and sacks (48). The 6’2” outside linebacker is only one piece of a Pittsburgh defense that also boasts 33-year-old All-Pro linebacker James Harrison, 36-year-old James Farrior, All-Star safety Troy Polamalu.

In tying down LaMarr Woodley to a 6-year contract, the Steelers have made a smart managerial move to ensure that one of the larger (and most important) pieces of the puzzle of Pittsburgh’s fearsome defense will remain on their roster for years to come.

There are various attributes that make Woodley such an important player to the Steelers, and thus such an important signing for the club. For one, being relatively young at 26 years, Woodley should be able to sustain his high level of play for most of the next six NFL lines seasons of his contract.

Since entering the NFL in 2007 –drafted 46th overall by the Steelers –the powerful linebacker has recorded 39 sacks, and posted at least 10 over the last three consecutive seasons.  With his stellar play, Woodley has established himself the past few seasons as not only an elite linebacker, but also one of the NFL’s premier defensive players.

However, given his new respectable stature, LaMarr Woodley will now be heading into more pressure to perform this season than ever. On an aging Steelers defense, in which 8 starters will be at least 30 years old when this season starts, the 5-year-pro will face much more responsibility than in his younger years.

James Farrior and James Harrison – keystones in the Steelers defense – are entering the last seasons of their respective NFL lines careers, and much of Pittsburgh’s future defensive success will depend on the likes of LaMarr Woodley.

Messina Mention: Having cashed in on this six-year, $61 million contract, LaMarr “The Wood” Woodley is now the second highest paid Steeler of all-time, behind Ben Roethlisberger.
