NFC North Bet - Packers vs. Redskins

Posted by Brett Nielson on 10/8/2010 12:37:49 PM

After an unexpected, but welcomed, standing ovation for Donovan McNabb upon his return to Philadelphia, the Washington Redskins will travel back home to face NFC North bet division leaders, the Green Bay Packers in a Week 5 NFL betting online game.

Here are the top 3 reasons why the Packers will beat and cover against the Redskins.

ESPN's Jenny Dell beaks this game down by the numbers.

(3-1) Green Bay Packers at (2-2) Washington Redskins
Live from FedEx Field - MD
Kickoff: 1:00 PM EST Sunday, October 10, 2010
Broadcast: FOX

NFL Betting Online:
Green Bay Packers -2.5
Washington Redskins +2.5
Total 44

1. Redskins Game Plan

Anybody who watched Washington last week against Philadelphia realized that their game plan midway through the first quarter was to gradually break down the Eagles defense by running the ball.

Throughout the entire game, McNabb only completed 8 passes, while Washington ran the ball 29 times. Although that strategy functioned well against Philadelphia (2-2), it could be a detrimental strategy against Green Bay, who had the best overall run defense in the 2009 NFL betting online season.

To boot, Washington's top running back, Clinton Portis, has been ruled out for 4-6 weeks with a third-degree groin sprain. Without Portis, the Redskins are left with second-year tailback Ryan Torain to carry the rushing load of this run-first offense.

2. Washington's Pass Offense

Without Clinton Portis and a potentially ineffective running game matching up against a stout Packer defense, the Redskins will be forced to open up their pass offense.

However, if Washington tries to dig deeper into their playbook, they may find that they don't have a big enough shovel. Donovan McNabb has only thrown 3 touchdowns in his past four games and Washington's number one wide receiver Santana Moss has caught just a single touchdown pass all NFL betting online season.

In addition, Green Bay's defense, led by All-Pro cornerback Charles Woodson, produced 30 interceptions last NFL betting season. Expect the Packers defensive unit to pick off McNabb at least twice, with NFL sack leader Clay Matthews pressuring him all game.

3. By The Numbers

According to ESPN, if the Packers, who rank first among the NFL in sacks (16), take down McNabb more than three times throughout the game, they have a whopping 77% chance of winning. Yet, if McNabb throws two or more touchdowns and Washington's offensive line holds up for one sack or less, the Redskins then have a 62% chance of winning.

The latter is much less bound to occur, with McNabb currently averaging less than one touchdown per game.
