NorthBet Numbers: Washington Redskins were 8-6-2 ATS this season.

The Washington Redskins waived goodbye to their long-time running back Clinton Portis on Monday, February 28.

Portis played for the Redskins for a total of seven seasons, accumulating 6,824 rushing yards and 49 touchdowns with the team.

Washington traded for the star running back in March 2004 after the Miami grad had an outstanding two-year run with the Denver Broncos. The Redskins gave up cornerback Champ Bailey and a second-round draft pick in exchange for Portis – who was coming off an excellent season rushing for 1,591 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.

Since acquiring him, Washington never really saw the same tailback. The electrifying Portis never matched his production from his 2003 season with Denver.

Portis, now 29-years old, has been plagued by injuries over the past few seasons and is without a doubt no longer a starter in this NFL betting lines league.

He’s coming off two horrendous seasons (less than 750 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns in both seasons combined) and Washington decided it was time to cut their losses.

Portis stands just 648 rushing yards shy of Hall of Famers John Riggins’ Washington franchise record, and 77 yards shy of 10,000 career rushing yards.

This is without a doubt a very smart move for the Redskins organization.

Throughout this past NFL betting lines season, Portis’ replacement, 24-year-old Ryan Torain, performed well enough to earn the starting role. Torain rushed for 742 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns in his first season as a starter.

After releasing Portis, Washington can use his $8.2 million to spend on younger, long-term NFL betting lines free agents.
