Seattle Seahawks Get Biggest Spread In Wild Card Betting

Posted by Matthew Forrester on 1/9/2016 5:48:13 PM

It’s hard to argue that any other team entered the wild card betting round with more momentum than the Seattle Seahawks, who are staring at the biggest point spread of the weekend.

Those that are electing to back the Vikings in this one have some valid reasons to. Minnesota feels like an “up and coming” team and there are tons of trends here that support them as a worthy take.

Minnesota is 7-2 ATS when paying a team with a winning record. They’re also 10-3 ATS in their last 13 home games and 5-0 ATS when playing at home against a team with a winning record. Despite a ton of obvious issues with this team, they did a great job of ingratiating themselves to the betting public with a league best 13-3 ATS record.

When it comes to covering, there’s no better team. The question is if Minnesota stands a chance against the Seattle juggernaut that’s a proven commodity in the post season.

NFL Wild Card Betting Line: Seattle -4.5 (40.0)

There are a mountain of reasons that you should actually take Seattle as soon as possible with this line climbing throughout the week. Seattle went 6-1 SU and ATS in their last 7 games, averaging 32.0 points for and just 14.0 points against over that stretch. That’s a ridiculous +18.0 point differential that would demolish this spread if they maintained the pace they’ve set heading in to the wild card betting weekend.

There’s also the general idea that Minnesota “lost” by beating Green Bay last weekend because if you’re going to try and avoid anyone in the NFC playoffs, it’s these Seattle Seahawks. These guys have ripped off a 6-2 SU record in their last 8 playoffs games, including a Super Bowl victory. The biggest knock against Seattle is that they’re only 4-4 ATS over those games. They are a team born from the pressures of the playoffs. They play as if its their god given right to win a Super Bowl.

It’s pretty scary to be honest, and that mentality makes it even harder to imagine a young team like Minnesota giving Seattle any real issues. They have the top rated scoring defense in the league, and Marshawn Lynch is ready to rumble after two months away from the game.

The handicapper in me would like to endorse a Minnesota play on an inflated spread, but I have to lay the points here because of Seattle’s penchant for running the score up on overvalued teams. The only thing that’s going to stop Seattle here – and I’m dead serious – is a blizzard. Take the favorite and hold the UNDER in a game I expect to be lopsided from the onset.

You can very well argue that Seattle is the best team in the NFC right now. You’d be hard strained to make that same case for Minnesota. If Seattle is your preference, take them as soon as possible. Should you prefer the home dog and the points, wait until the weekend because this wild card betting line will probably only get bigger.
