NFL Betting: 49ers Face A Moment Of Urgency In September

Posted by Stan Jenkins on 9/26/2013 12:39:06 PM

The San Francisco 49ers just got roughed up by the Seattle Seahawks in more ways than one. Now, they’ll try to rebound against an Indianapolis Colt team that faces its own issues.

Indianapolis Colts @ San Francisco 49ers

Betting line: 49ers -10

Why Indianapolis Will Win

This is a game in which both teams’ best reasons for winning are rooted in their own levels of motivation, their own attempts to get better as the young season moves along. Indianapolis can’t be seen as an attractive choice in this game because of what it has done through two weeks. The Colts have looked very shaky and have not given the impression that they are ready to get back to the playoffs. No, Indianapolis’ best chance in this game is based on the notion that this team will get angry at itself in response to its stumbles, and that it will use this anger to improve to a substantial extent. Quarterback Andrew Luck, who played college ball at Stanford under Jim Harbaugh (his head coach at the time), will now go up against Harbaugh for the first time in the NFL. Luck is going to be pumped up for this game. He knows what Harbaugh and San Francisco defensive coordinator Vic Fangio like to do on defense, so he’s going to be prepared for the 49ers’ game plan. This will give Indianapolis a recognizable advantage within the X-and-O workings of this game. Indianapolis, intent on getting back to the postseason and outdueling the Houston Texans in the AFC South Division, knows that it needs to begin to perform at a much higher level than the past two weeks have revealed. This kind of pressure could focus the Colts’ energies and deliver a better outcome on the field.

Why San Francisco Will Win

The 49ers, like the Colts, won’t be recommended as a betting selection on Sunday due to what they’ve done to this point, at least not in week two. The Niners’ offense plainly failed to show up at all in a 29-3 loss in Seattle against the Seahawks. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick showed flashes of quality for brief stretches of time, but he committed huge mistakes in the red zone and at important points in the game. The rest of the Niners’ offense was totally smothered and silenced. San Francisco receiver Anquan Boldin, who was so good in week one against the Green Bay Packers, was dominated by Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman. Frank Gore was stonewalled, a testament to how poorly San Francisco’s offensive line performed. After a zero-level outing such as that one, it would be very surprising if head coach Jim Harbaugh does not get his players to dramatically improve. The Niners will be fired up for this game, and they know that if they fall to 1-2, the Seahawks will gain a two-game lead against them in the NFC West.

Who Will Win

When you think about this game in full, you should expect a better performance from each of these teams, but this contest is simply too important for San Francisco to lose. Don’t expect the 49ers to fail to get the job done here.
