Dwight Howard won his third consecutive Defensive POY Award this Monday, after receiving 114 of the 120 votes. Coming in second place was Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett who received only one first-place vote.

By receiving this award, Howard broke the NBA lines record by being the only player in NBA history to earn three straight Defensive POY honors.
Behind the 6’11” center are many players who have reached the two-consecutive-defensive honors, with Ben Wallace being the latest player in 2004-06. Wallace also holds the NBA record for winning the award four years in his career, along with Dikembe Mutombo.

Dwight Howard truly earned the honor, finishing this regular season with 2.4 blocks, 1.4 steals and 14.1 rebounds per match. When talking about the award, he spoke very enthusiastically.
“It’s my job to keep it going,” he said.  “I’m going to try to do the best I can on the defensive end to dominate and to change the game. It definitely is an honor to be considered one of the best defensive players to play the game, and I’m still young. So hopefully, I can keep it up.”

The Magic will need Dwight Howard to keep up his defensive play if they want to have any chance at winning a championship this season. Orlando lost their first playoff game, a match in which Howard only recorded 1 block and no steals.
